Estrada Nova
Estrada Nova is a group that was born from the originality and musicality of its members. Long time friends, Marcelo Vieira and Luis Gustavo are string players who had early beginnings in classical music, playing in orchestras and chamber groups. They both redirected their careers towards new techniques and sonorities. The search to constantly find new ways to perform the cello and violin with new rhythms and harmonic roles emerged from their passion for popular music and bowed instruments.
The blending of friendship and musicality led to a promise of bringing new light, or new sound, to popular music and string instruments. Marcelo and Luis developed fine and diverse experiences from popular music practice. The combination of Marcelo’s experience as a Brazilian music cellist for more than seven years and Luis experience from his studies of violin and jazz in the USA, reveals an unexpected repertoire, comprised of instrumental music and songs.
The cellist became a singer, which allowed him to bring another element to his work and resulted in “Cello & Voice.”. The performance also depends on the use of digital effects and pedals, enriching the arrangements and surprising the audience at every moment with a wide variation of improvisations and rhythms. Estrada Nova is a promise and a present to the audiences; showing that there are still new ways to be followed in music and that the borderline between classical and popular music is only there if we allow it to be.
